Leonardo hotel 3* - Antwerp

We've stayed in this 3* hotel for 1 night. This hotel is situated right next to the Antwerp railwaystation. This is only a 15 min walk from the townhall and 2 min from the most famous shopping street 'Meir'.

We booked a double room on the back of the hotel ( HINT: as I have been informed the rooms on the street are noisy) on a Sunday evening for 70eur/room incl breakfast. Unfortunately I can not rate the breakfast as we've chosen for a long sleep instead. This as breakfast is only served until 10 am (till 10.30 am on saturdays & sundays).

Room:
The rooms are spacious enough with 2 single beds next to each other (90 *200 cm) and a desk. Unfortunately there is an old carpet floor which makes it look dirty (dots on the floor), even though this was a clean room.

Bathroom:
The bathroom is small, but lucally the toilet was seperate. The toilet room needed a refurbishment as the walls needed to be painted (dirty impression).
The bathroom had a sink with right next to it a bath tub with shower. The shower had a good water pressure and was with a thermostat tap. The soap is of a low quality in a dispenser. There is a small but strong hairdryer (1200 watt). There is only 1 small towel, a feedtowel and 2 big towels at your disposal.
It has to be said the bathroom gave an old impression (yellow dots in the tub and sink)

HINT: just wanted to inform they strictly follow procedures. Check out is at 11.30 am, so we got a call at 12am with the message we should have been checked out already. So you better ask for a late check out in advance when needed. (It was admitted half an hour longer in the end).

Advantages:
- location towards city centre
- price/quality
- seperate toilet
- good matrasses (hard matras)

Disadvantages:
- bathroom & toilet need refurbishment
- still carpet floor
- no real identity/ pure business hotel.

The location of this hotel is the biggest advantage, and so is there price. Therefor I would rate this hotel 6,5/10 for a 3* hotel due to the very good location. You can not expect to much for 70eur for a double room incl breakfast.

Paloma Renaissance resort & spa 5* - Kemer-Antalya (Turkey)

This Renaissance hotel has been totally renovated since winter 2015 and is located in Kemer, near Antalya.
It is about a 50min. drive from the Antalya airport.
This luxury resort is recently taken over by the Paloma management and won back his greatness after the renevation. Beside the lobby/reception, this hotel looks brandnew.
The rooms are modern/stylish with nice furniture. Especially the beds are of high quality with all different kind of pillows (pillow menu available).

We were lucky to have one of the duplex villa's in this resort.

Room:
The duplex villa is very large. On the ground floor there is 1 bathroom with shower/toilet & sink, a living room with flat screen and a kitchen with bar. And also a balcony overlooking the big garden.
On the first floor there are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed (200*180cm)and one with 2 sperate beds (180*90 cm). There is also a more modern bathroom on the first floor with rainshower, toilet & sink.
There are wardrobes in both rooms and a    safe (free of charge). The beds are really of a very high quality and definitely the different pillows are great!
There is a stone floor in all rooms, but unfortunately they put a carpet under the beds in both rooms.
The minibar in the room is complimentary and refilled on a daily basis with soft drinks.

I also had the chance to visit the standard rooms. Also those rooms are very spacious. You have the choise between 1 king size bed or 2 queen size beds, which is great for friends.
The rooms and bathroom have the same facilities as the duplex villa (toilet is also in the bathroom)

The junior suites are of course a lot larger and there the bathroom is integrated in the room. They have both bath and shower (unfortunately no rain shower). But it is very spacious and had a big terrace with sunbeds.

Bathroom:
The bathroom in the duplex villa has a rainshower with a very good water pressure. There is plenty of amenities like:
- shampoo/conditioner/liquid soap/soap bar/ body lotion
- rental kid
- cotton buds
- shower cap
-make-up cotton
- shaving kit
- tissues
(Those amenities are refilled on a daily base).
There is also a large and a small towel + hand towels provided (we had 2 of each every day).
The hairdryer is of a good quality and is strong.

As there is a turndown service in the villa's every evening, you'll never have a lack of towels.
The toilet is in the bathroom, but as there are 2 bathrooms in the duplex villa, this does not cause any problem.

Restaurant:
There are 7 restaurants in this hotel, wherefrom 6 a la carte restaurants:
2 free of charge:
1. Sunset restaurant - fish restaurant at the beach
2. Seasons restaurant - international restaurant in the main building (with terrace)

And the others are with supplement:
3. Lotus restaurant - eastern cuisine
4. Santé fe restaurant - Mexican
5. Safran restaurant - kebab & Turkish
6. Steakhouse - BBQ

The main restaurant has a huge terrace overlooking the large garden and a wide range of food.

Bar:
The hotelbar is large and there is live piano music every night (inside). The bar had also a terrace with sofa's to relax and enjoy the cocktails.
The drinks are as well international (Bacardi, Martini, Baileys, Tuborg) as local (vodka,...). The soft drinks are Pepsi.

Breakfast:
Served from 6.30 till 11 am with a very large selection of food for all people. It's really way to mutch to name it.
But I do want to mention the fresh juices and wide variety of fresh fruit and bread.

The lunch is served from 12.30 to 2.30 pm in the main restaurant or can be taken in the Sunset beach bar (a la carte selection) - from 10 am to 6 pm.
Occassionally (when the hotel is busy) the smaller buffet with grilled food is also opened at noon in the safran restaurant.

Diner:
diner is served as of 7pm to 9.30 pm and  is always themed (international, Turkish, asian, Mexican,..) but always has a very large number of dishes.
This is really one of those hotels where you can always find something what is your 'cup of tea'. Next to the wide range of salads and cold dishes, there is several fresh fish, pasta's, rice, fries, vegetables with all different preperations and the different kinds of meat prepared on the BBQ. And of course there is several preperations of pizza.
Different kinds of fresh fruit and a variety of deserts is available.
Salad buffet

Main course buffet - with showcooking

Organic buffet

Fruit buffet
Bread & Pizza buffet

Fruit buffet
HINT: there is also a 'bakkery' which serves delicious cakes with all kinds of fresh fruit. THis is opened every afternoon to enjoy your coffee in the lobby of the hotel or on the terrace.
I'd advice you to pass by, as this pastries are even better then those served during diner and lunch time.

 Front desk:
Staff was not very friendly at our arrival, was a very quick check-in without any explanation about the hotelfacilities. Unfortunately the hotelmap was not very helpfull eather (to small)
We've asked how to get to Antalya @ the front desk by public transport and it was as this was the first time someone ever asked this...  First of all there was a communication problem as most of them don't speak english very well. Second they where not familiar (I guess most of the clients just take a taxi - €40 to Antalya). By bus: €2,5 pp.

Swimming pool:
There are 3 swimming pools in this hotel:

1. the animated and largest swimming pool with 3 tubes
At this pool music is played all day long by the animation DJ. There is animation in and around the pool from 10 am to 12.30 and from 3pm to 5 pm. In the middle of the pool there is the bar (you can't drink in the pool itself unfortunately). There is aqua gym, aqua biking, darts, waterpolo,...
But into my opinion this pool is rather small for the n° of guests this hotel has in high season.
Luckaly there is a very large garden with sunbeds, so there is also a lot of people in the garden and at the beach.

2. the relax swimming pool
I haven't been at this pool, as it is rather a small pool ( I guess 3*8metres) and only a 30 sunbeds around.

3. the swimming pool at the villa's
This swimming pool is the smallest and only the size of a private pool with about 30 seats around.
As this pool is only accessable for the villa guests, it is always calm. But the advantage is the fact there is a butler serving you at the pool.

The beach:
The beach of the hotel is accessable via the beautifull garden of this hotel. There is sunbeds and artificial sand. As this is a 'rock beach', there are 2 "piers" to give acces to the sea. Of course there are also sunbeds and even bigpacks at your proposal.
When you're in the sea, the view on the mountains is amazing!

Sunset beachbar view from the sea

Animation:
When you're really looking for an animated hotel, this is not the place to be. There is an animation team, but they're not very motivated (at least not at the end of the season). They're not very pushy (which is good), but most of the plannen activities did just not take place. Once they started an activity, people joined. But they preferred to be out of the sun I guess.
The evening animation is not very spectacular either. There is a theater and a programm every night. Most of the nights this is an external group (acrobates, Kenian dancers,...), 2 nights where done by the hotel animation team and this was really of poor quality. The mister selection was pathetic and so was the comedy night. This is the games where apparently made by a team that had a lack of inspiration (only 2 persons where laghing as they where dronk). After a whole season you would think they've changed things to make it worth looking at. But...
So the animation was a disappointment in this hotel (lucally we did not expect to much animation when we booked this hotel)

Hint: there is also a small 'relax' pool and there is the pool at the villa (with bar) to relax. This as there is always music on the bigger pool.

Advantages:
- very good price/quality
- overal very clean hotel
- high quality beds & pillows
- very large villa rooms, especially for families a big plus (seperate bedrooms - to share with friends are children)
(But also standard rooms are very spacious!)
- wide range of food choise of a high quality level! (Also thanks to the different restaurants)
- fresh juices during breakfast!
- good WiFi in all public area's and rooms.
- very spacious hotel. Due to several bars and restaurants the crowd is spread over the hotel.
- very good follow up of guest relations!
(I complained about the dirty tablecloths (with nylon they only whipped clean) they used and the day after they washed them all and in the evening they used cotton as I proposed). Very satisfiing 😃
- All-inclusive formule of the highest quality! 24h drinks and food included.
- Beautiful  and very large garden. This hotel is really situated in the middle of nature and you don't even have the feeling being so close to the sea.

Disadvantages:
- carpet on top of the floor in the room (hygiene?)
- animated swimming pool is rather small for the number of rooms.
- front desk staff not really helpfull (very quick check-in, if we asked where are room was situated, somewhere on the end of the hallway to the right in the garden... (No clear roomplan available).
- the staff is not very well known with english, not even at the front desk!
- poor animation programm
- Waiters are only friendly when you tipp them.

HINT:
How to get to the old town of Antalya?
To go by public transport from the Renaissance hotel, you have to take one of the minibusses (by raising your hands in front of the hotel to the bus with indication 'Antalya'): € 2,5 pp or 5,5TL pp. Tell the busdriver you want to be dropped at the '5M Migros' (shopping center). There you can take one of the red busses with the number 'KL08' or 'KC06' direction antalya (cost 2 TL). You'll Benin that bus for about 15 min and will see the tramrails on the right (as the sea) and the old town in front of you.
To get back you have to do the same bus switch, but this time you have to cross the big shopping street to the modern mall (away from the harbor). And in this big street there is a busstop and look for the same bus Numbers.

General conclusion:
This 5* hotel is really a very good value for money! I would advice it for as well couples that are looking for a high quality all-inclusive and families (due to the very spacious rooms and several options for family rooms with doors between the bedrooms). As I said do not have the highest expectations about the animation, as this is rather a 'soft animation' into my opinion (but guest relations promissed me to work on this).
This hotel get's a 8,5/10 overall and this thanks to the amazing food variaty and high quality. And of course the brand new and renovated rooms and other common facilities.

Hotel ramada Brühl/Köln

This 4* hotel is situated at a 30 min. drive from the city centre of Köln and a 5 min. drive from the well known theme park Phantasialand.
So ideallly situated to combine those 2 'attractions' in Germany.

A big advantage of this hotel vs the hotels in the city centre of Köln is the free parking space around the hotel (as public parking spots are expensive in Köln).

We had a great Welcome at the front desk! So even though the hotel is no real modern look, we felt welcome!

We've paid 75eur for 1 night including breakfast. Therafor I can say price/quality is good in this hotel.

We've booked a standard room and got room 110 which was a clean and spacious room (for a stnd room). There is no minibar in the room, but there is a vending machine at the lift with bottles of drinks, nuts, chips, wine,...

Room:
The room has a standard size with space for a seat and a desk with chair. Unfortunately there is carpet in all rooms.
There is a small wardrobe in the hallway and twin beds.
- soft pillows (might be to soft for those that don't like it) - but there is a spare one in the wardrobe.
- good matrasses (2 x 200*90)
- small individual blanquets (not long enough for sb. of 2 metres)
- 2 bottles of free sparkling water

Bathroom:
Very small bathroom with walk-in shower and toilet in the bathroom.
- shower with very good water pressure
- shampoo and soap dispenser
- 2 big/2 medium/2 small towels + feet towel
- tissues and make-up mirror provided
- toilet paper is recycled and not soft at all

Breakfast:
- breakfast offers various products but was not my cup of tea. Broads did not give the impression to be freshly baked (they where soft and wasn't supposed to be). And as this is the most important to me, I felt disappointed. And also the room where breakfast was served did not give me a clean/fresh feeling. There was carpet all over and the atmosphere was not very welcoming (even though the staff was very friendly and helpfull)
Anyhow there was plenty of choise and for the price we've paid for the room including breakfast this was more then fine!
There were the following products:
- small breads
- normal bread
- pancakes
- croissants
- cereals
- 5 kinds of jam
- nutella
- 4 kinds of yoghurt
- 4 kinds of fruits
- 4 kinds of dried fruits
- different hams/ cheeses
- baked sausages
- scrambled eggs
-...

There was a coffee machine with espresso, hot chocolate,...
And also a machine for orange juice (normal/multivitamine)

Advantages:
- free and big parking space around the hotel
- possibility to open the Windows
- nice shower with good water pressure
- good matrasses

Disadvantages:
- small bathroom with toilet close to the sink and door.
- very small blanquets
- recycled toilet paper
- carpet in the room (light smell of smoke included)

I would rate this hotel a 6,5/10 as it is a good price/quality. But it is not what you expect from a 4* hotel. But as prices are low this is real good value for money and if I would need to book a 'cheap' hotel close to Köln and/or Phantasialand, I could really advice this hotel!
I just think this hotel needs a make- over, especially for the common spaces that really look old and not very 2015.

Bastion hotel deluxe - Amsterdam airport 4*

This 4* hotel is located in Hoofddorp which is the business center close to Schiphol airport.

Hint: you can book this hotel if you're looking for a cheap hotel to enjoy the city centre of Amsterdam. It is only a 15 min drive and you have a free car park during your stay.

Room:

The twin beds are both 'boxspring' with a good matress. Unfortunately the pillows are of a very poor quality (filled with foam), which caused me neck pain.

There's is a big flat screen in front of the bed at the wool.
Also a mini fridge is provided (empty), 2 small bottles of water are provided free of charge and a water cooker with some tea and coffee facilities.
A small safe is free of charge in the wardrobe (no laptops can be inserted)
The windows are twice double glass windows which isolates the room from the frequent passing by airplanes (it depends the airplane and wind direction).
Unfortunately the curtains do not make the room dark during the night, which is a pitty for a hotelroom.

Bathroom:
The bathroom is not that spacious, but there is a large walk-in shower with a very good water pressure!
There are 2 sinks, which takes to much space for this small space. As the toilet is in the bathroom, you really need to stand next to the toilet to reach the 2nd sink.

There is 1 small bottle showergel per person and a small soap bar, 2 small and 2 large towels.

Hint: there is a Mc Donald next door who is opened 7am till 3 am and 24h on friday & saturday.

Advantages:
- high pressure and large shower
- several plugs next to the beds
- modern bathroom
- free parking space around the hotel + free airport shuttle (sometimes its cheaper to book a room than paying the airport parking fee)

Disadvantages:
- front desk not very friendly - no hospitality
- 2 twin beds only  (2 * 200 * 90)
- WiFi not strong enough to charge movies
- curtains don't block the daylight, which is a pitty.
- pillows are of a very poor quality (foam) and no spare once foreseen.
- the double windows do not entirely stop the noise of the airplanes going up (but is pretty normal when you sleep right next to the airport :-))

Into my opinion this hotel should not use 'deluxe' in it's name. Because this is a standard 4* airport hotel.
Therefor I would rate this hotel 6/10. It is correct for the price we've paid (big discounts - only 61eur for the room on a Sunday night).

We did not take the breakfast (which cost 14eur pppn), as we wanted to have a long sleep and late check-out (which is free off charge till 1 PM).
But when we checked out the receptionist told us 'well, that's right on time (check out is normally at noon)' which gave me a very bad mood just been awake.... So I would advice her to check the system before she starts her conversation this negative.

Hotel Meneer Van Eijck - Oisterwijk/Tilburg

This 3* hotel is situated in the forest at a 15 min. drive from the city centre of Tilburg. We stayed here to enjoy a famous party 'Roze maandag' (pink monday) called which is a big party spread over the city centre of Tilburg.

This hotel has a very typical style which is hard to define. I would say it seems to be an american range in the middle of the woods. The building is set up with a lot of wood and also the garden is totally in line with the building.

View from our room

Room:
We called the day before arrival to make sure we got a nice room and as promissed they gave us a corner room (nr 10). This was great to have all the windows, as the room was rather small.
But the room is very nicely decorated and clean. It is totally in line with the whole atmosphere of the hotel in general, where you have the impression to be at a range in the middle of the woods.
We had a double bed (160 cm) with a very soft topper, which made us enjoy the (rather short) night.
The TV is just above the bed, which is a good location. But the satelite systeem was not working properly.
A big plus where definitely the black curtains who ashored you your nightrest in the dark.

Bathroom:
The bathroom is small with a toilet, sink and a big shower (the glass construction is almost half of the bathroom), which is a plus and the most important.
The shower has a very good pressure!
I have to say that the automatic tab is not  a plus as the water stops rubbing all the time and it does not always work properly. There where 2 big & 2 small towels and 2 small bottles of shampoo & showergel each.
There is no hair dryer provided in the room, but you can barrow the one in the closet of the hallway (only 1, so you must be lucky). Unfortunately there is only a raisorplug provided in the bathroom (low voltage). So you can only use your hairdryer in the room (where no mirrors are provided).

Breakfast:
The breakfast is served from 7 to 10 am (which is early after a night out ;-))

HINT: there was the possibility to have a late breakfast with a selection of the buffet for 10eur pp extra.

The breakfast buffet seems to be small in your first impression, but there is a lot of food in small portions:
- small croissants
- small breads with meat
- fresh white and brown bread
- Nutella
- strawberry jam
- cheese
- ham
- chocolate sprinklers
- fruit
- yoghurt
- booked eggs
- pancakes
- water & orange juice
-...

Which is a large selection for this 10-room hotel.

Coffee and tea are served at your table and they ask you to serve fresh scrambled eggs.

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel which gives you the calmed you need when you have a day off, but as the hotel is close to the city centre of Tilburg you're having plenty of options (walk in the surrounding woods, shopping, party,...).

Positive points:
- this hotel offers a good price/quality (we paid 90eur per room incl breakfast & tax)
- nice, fresh and broad breakfast
- friendly staff
- nice and unique atmosphere due to the location and how the hotel is set-up.

Negative points:
- rather a small room (but ok for this price /definitely when you have a corner room where you do not have that narrow feeling due to the different Windows)
- shortness of plugs next to the bed for mobile and in the bathroom.
- WiFi is not working properly - none of our Iphone's could be connected.

I would rate this 3* hotel 7,5/10. This as the staff is very friendly & helpfull. Everything is well prepared and clean, but there are some details missing.

Hallstatt - Hallstätte See - Upper Austria

Hallstatt is the most famous village in Austria and his a large history. With it's superb location next to the lake the view is just stuning.
The Chinese people have build a copy of this city and it was finishes in 2011.
So a lot of them that come to Europe pass by the real version.

There is a protestant

and a catholique Church in this small town.

All houses are build on the rocks directly at the lake and so the rocks are really the walls of the back of their houses (not even covered).
The main square of the village is beautiful. Normally the city centre is car free except for deliveries in the morning 😀

One of the hidden secrets of this town is not mentioned largely, but you have to go down in the cellar of one of the shops where a Roman bath house was discovered. This shop is a jewelry at the corner of the Hallstatt museum and just just have to walk down.

An other highlight in this city next to the great history of the houses is the scull house which is situated at the graveyard of the catholique Church. These sculls are from the Hallstatt citizens that mentioned in their testament to have their scull and bones in this 'chappel'.

I had a great lunch in the city center directly at the water, called: 'Brauhaus'
The food is of high quality for a reasonable price for such location.
The terrace has one of the most perfect views overlooking the lake with a direct view over the castle.

HINT: you can go by train to Hallstatt, there you can take the shuttle boat that awaits you to go to Hallstadt (railway station is at the other side of the lake).

Hallstatt is named after the famous salt mine on top of the city. You can visit this mine as there is a lift to the top. Calculate 2,5h to go up, visit the mines and go down again. This as you will get special clothes as there is a slide of 60 meter to go from one space to another.

Next to the visit of the mine and the city centre you can go by lifts to go to the top of the mountain (5-fingers called) where you have a stuning view overlooking the lake and the mountains.

Because of lack of time I was not able to go to the top neither to visit the mine, which was a pitty. But I wanted to mension there is a full day of activities to do in and around Hallstadt.
